Chapter Twenty-One

Josie didn’t come to class that day. No one raised their hand to ask where she was. I don’t know if everyone else knew but me, or if all of us were drowning in the dark, trying not to look at her empty chair, too afraid to find out some new horrible part of the fate that awaited us all.

Not if I can help it. I have a plan. We can stop the Incorporation.

I wanted to scream the words, but I just kept repeating them over and over in my head instead.

We can stop the Incorporation.

I knew it wasn’t entirely true. Stopping the Incorporation would take the work of an army that didn’t exist. But stopping Project Progeny would save my peers, and that had to be enough.

They took us to the Haven Dome for afternoon lessons. Half the group worked on tying up vines while the other half planted new seeds.

Walsh stationed himself near me. He didn’t have to try very hard to manage it since everyone else in the group was doing everything possible to stay away from me.

“Did you make it home in time to feed Mari breakfast?” Walsh propped up a vine and passed me a piece of twine.

“She and Harper were already eating when I got home,” I said. “But I still had plenty of time for breakfast. My meeting with Captain Pace only took a few minutes.”

“You saw Captain Pace?” One of the girls on the other side of the trellis peeked between the vines. “Have they let the guards out of the barracks?”

“No,” I said.

The girl’s shoulders rounded.

“I went to Captain Pace’s office,” I said. “But I did walk through the barracks and saw a lot of the guards.”

“Are they okay?” the girl asked.

“As long as you count bored as hell and stir-crazy as okay.” I leaned closer to her. “Everyone I saw was up and moving around with no sign of injury from fighting in the city. I’m sorry, I wish I could tell you more.”

She opened her mouth like she was going to say something but disappeared back through the trellis as Mrs. Burton came down the row.

I quickly tied a vine in place.

Mrs. Burton stopped beside me, pursing her lips as she examined my work. “You’re going to break the plant if you tie the twine that tight. Give it a lighter touch, Lanni.”

“Yes, ma’am.” I untied the twine, carefully retying it as Mrs. Burton wandered down the row smiling at the more competent students’ work.

The girl stayed on her side of the trellis until Mrs. Burton had moved on to examining the planting trays the other half of the class were working on.

The girl watched me for a moment, the wrinkles on her brow growing. “At least you know where your boyfriend is. At least you get to see him.”

“I don’t have a boyfriend.” I lifted my hands away from the vines, knowing I wouldn’t be able to manage a gentle touch. “That’s why I went to see Captain Pace.
